Sword Art Online Fans Get Ready: GGO Alternative Series And Season 3 Are At Our Doorstep!

Following the events of Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online 2, and the Ordinal Scale movie, SAO fans can no longer wait to fill their needs for a dose of romance, action, and pure fun that the SAO series offers!

It’s been nearly six years since the release of SAO, and surprisingly, the wildfire of enthusiasm that it caused still hasn’t been put out. In the hearts of true fans, SAO is very much alive even though the series is currently not airing.

Still remember The Black Swordsman and The Flash dashing through the floors destroying monsters and bosses of all kinds on their way? We do too!

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

We have first met the world of Gun Gale Online in Sword Art Online 2. Following the escape from the world of Sword Art Online, Kirito was soon approached by the administration of another game called Gun Gale Online. Then, he was persuaded to dive into the gaming world once again and solve the mysterious murder case in Gun Gale Online.

After making it into the game, Kirito soon met Sinon, a young girl who played the game to overcome her fear of guns. Uncertain of the powers of the killer from GGO, ‘Death Gun,’ the two raced to prevent him from taking more lives.

So, what exactly does that have to do with SAO season 3?

Well, many people refer to Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online (SAO: GGO) as the third season of SAO. However, that is not the case.

SAO: GGO is an alternative version of the Gun Gale Online world and an alternative setting of the Sword Art Online 2 series. Therefore, it doesn’t represent the third season of SAO but merely a spin-off.

Don’t panic! The real season 3 of Sword Art Online will still be released, but we would like to talk about this version first, as the series will air on April 8, 2018, before SAO 3 makes it on the screen.

Is It Going To Be Fun?

While SAO: GGO may not be the sequel to the popular franchise, it is bound to bring loads of action and fun on the screen. And, of course, guns – It’s the GGO world after all!

This spin-off of the Reki Kawahara’s SAO series is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Keiichi Sigsawa.

The story of SAO: GGO revolves around Karen Kohiruimaki, a 183-centimeter-tall college student who has a hard time meeting new friends and dealing with people in general. Due to her height, she also feels insecure most of the time and finds it difficult to hang out with other girls.

However, everything changes as Karen enters the Gun Gale Online world. There, she creates a cute, chibi avatar named Ren who is less than 150 centimeters tall and appears exceptionally girlish by wearing an entirely pink outfit.

Soon enough, Karen comes across Pitohui, a beautiful tan-skinned female character. The two of them hit it off right away and become inseparable after Pitohui convinces Karen to join the Squad Jam, a team battle version of the Bullet of Bullets tournament.

Will the two remain friends despite the challenges they come across? I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Don’t miss the first episode on 8th April!

The One And Only: Sword Art Online 3!

If you’re not a fan of GGO world and you can’t be satisfied with the SAO 2 spin-off, you will probably be happy to hear that the real Sword Art Online season 3 is COMING OUT SOON!

Several months ago, at Dengeki Bunko Festival in Tokyo, it has been announced that SAO is returning with the adaptation of Reki Kawahara’s “Alicization” arc. Now, we’ve also found out that it’s going to happen in 2018 and that whole Alicization arc will be covered in the third season.

The plot of this 4th main arc of the SAO series is set in the year 2026 when Kikuoka Seijurou offers Kirito a job at a private company called Rath. The work includes testing the Soul Translator (STL), a fourth-generation experimental FullDive machine, which runs on entirely different principles compared to previous systems.

After accepting the job, Kirito’s task is to remain in FullDive during weekends. However, Kirito doesn’t know that the company’s primary purpose is not to create a new, safe gaming console but to create a Bottom-Up type Artificial Intelligence for military purposes.

Rath began their quest by copying a soul of a newborn baby and using it as a template for creating the new AI, Alice, which is taken care of in the virtual world called Underworld. However, since the AI isn’t able to perform anything humanistic, the company enrolls Kirito in hopes that he will be able to influence the AI to break the laws of the virtual world.

Since the timeline in this world is thousand times faster than in the real world, Kirito will get trapped in Underworld for 11 years as a child. Furthermore, upon coming out of the game, Rath will block his memories. Kirito will also soon realize that there are influential people who want to get rid of him for good and make sure his memories don’t leak.

When, when, WHEN!?

While the airing date remains uncertain, the creator of Sword Art Online is positive that the third season of this worldwide popular anime will go live in 2018.

On the 2017 New Year’s Eve, Reki Kawahara greeted his fans with the following statement:

“Happy New Year! 2018 is the year for GGO & SAO 3.”

So, there it is, a strong statement that indicates SAO will most likely return before the year ends.

Until then, stay tuned for more news and make sure to check out the SAO 2 spin-off that’s set in the Gun Gale Online world. It will undoubtedly serve as a nice appetizer before the main dish makes it to the table (ermm, screen)!
